begin to waver, Lieutenant Korn reorganized them and continued with both
platoons across the field. Severely wounded by mortar fire, he continued to lead
the attack until he wns no longer nble to walk. By bis gallant performance ot
duty, Lieutenant Korn contributed in a marked degree to the success of the
nttack.

chest, and lowered him safely to the ground. Through his qulck thinking, cou-
rageous action, and disregard for personal sufety, Corporal Gai-rity saved the life
of his comrade and upheld the finest tmclitlons of the mllitary servlci>_
Stair Sergeant Albert F. Wilson (Army serial No. ) (then technician
fifth grnde), Medical Department, Army of the United States, a member of the
147th Quartermaster Battalion (DUKW), dls11lnyed heroism in southem France
on 5 September 1944. Sighting a 6 by 6 amphibian truck speeding and being
driven In a reckless manner, racing through narrow roads and villages, and
forcing pedestrians and cars to flee, Ile voluutarlly climbed to the front bumper
ot the jeep In which he was riding, leaped onto the bouncing truck, and succes&--
fully brought it to n halt hardly 20 feet from a group of smitll children who were
in grave danger of being run over. The heroic conduct of Sergeant Wi!.,on
reflects great credit on himself and the Army of the United ~'tates.

A.rmy, a member of thP 110th Infantry Regiment, displayeu heroism In combat
agninst the enemy in Germany on 5 November 19-!4. Commanding Company A,
he was seriously wounded during the attnck on S!monskall by bis unit. Despite
his serious and painful leg wounds, Captain Hanai contlnned to ulrect tho opera-
tions of his company until he was evacuated the following day.
Major Richard D. Melcher, (then captain), Inspector General's Depart-
ment, Army of the United States, commanding Compnny K, 134th Infantry Regi-
ment, displayed heroism in action in the vlclnlty of St. Lo, France, on 15 July 1944.
When his regiment's attack was baited he went forward and found that heavy
enl'.my fire had stopped It. It was decided tlrnt the best way to resume the attack
was to blast a hole 1n the hedgerow to aUow the tnnks to pass through. Mnjor
Melcher advanced across an open field, exposing himself constantly to enemy tire,
aud set TNT. He then returned over the same dangerous route and detonated the
chnrge with bazooka fire, thus enabling the supporting tnnks to pass through nnd
deliver fire on the enemy strong points, Major Mclche'l's heroic actions permitted
his regiment to gain its objective.
