MEMORANDUM FOR SEE DISTRIBUTION
SUBJECT: Army Directive 2021-31 (Managing Active Date of Rank for Aviation Branch
Warrant Officers in the Regular Army)
1. Reference Army Regulation (AR) 600–8–29 (Officer Promotions), 9 September 2020.
2. Purpose. This directive establishes policy for managing the active date of
rank (ADOR) for aviation branch warrant officers (military occupational specialty
series 152–155). This directive supersedes relevant provisions in Army directives and
regulations.
3. Applicability. The provisions of this directive apply to the Regular Army, Army
National Guard/Army National Guard of the United States, and U.S. Army Reserve.
4. Policy. AR 600–8–29, paragraph 3–16, prescribes the steps for computing
promotion eligibility for chief warrant officer two (CW2). This directive changes policy
only for aviation warrant officers one (WO1s) serving in the Regular Army, and will not
affect the automatic promotion of other branch warrant officers to CW2 following the
second anniversary of service when a minimum of 18 months on the active-duty list has
been achieved. Effective 1 October 2021, eligibility for promotion to CW2 for aviation
warrant officers and reset of their ADOR will be determined as follows:
a. CW2 automatic promotion ineligibility will be added as AR 600–8–29,
paragraph 3–16e:
An aviation warrant officer in initial-entry, rotary-wing student status without an
aviation military occupational specialty will not be eligible for automatic promotion to
CW2.
b. ADOR reset for aviation warrant officers will be added as AR 600–8–29,
paragraph 4–5h:
The ADOR of an aviation warrant officer will be reset to the latter in time of two
events: date of graduation from the Warrant Officer Basic Course or date of award of
an aviation military occupational specialty. The U.S. Army Training and Doctrine
Command is responsible for resetting the ADOR of all aviation warrant officers.
